About Us
Angus is a small town of approximately 457 residents located on Interstate Highway 45, just six miles south of Corsicana, Texas. Angus provides the comfort of country living while being within an hour's drove from the amenities offered by its larger neighbor to the north, Dallas.
The community of Angus was established by A. Angus in 1871 soon after rail lines were completed. The first hay press in this part of Texas was located in Angus. A school was started in 1874 under the direction of Lila Blackburn. The original schoolhouse was a two room frame building which was moved several times before being replaced with a brick building which provided space for several grades in each room. The school merged with the Corsicana school district in 1941. The Angus schoolhouse was used as a community center until it was pruchased by Gilbert Sutherlin who demolished it in 1985. A historical marker now stands on the property where the school was located (on Bonner Avenue). The first church in Angus was built in 1872 and a post office operated in Angus in 1874, but was later discontinued.
The City of Angus was incorporated in August of 1972 with Aubrey Smith serving as mayor. The city was de-incorporated in July 1973 and filed for re-incorporation the same day, excluding the tract of land that is now the City of Mustang. R.O. Baker served as mayor after the re-incorporation of Angus. The city of Angus held a liquor election in the mid-70's and prospered for many years from the sale of alcoholic beverages in a predominately dry county.
City Council meetings were held in the old schoolhouse, and later at the livestock barn until the current City Hall was build. The 2,100 square foot building was erected in 1978 to serve as the Angus Government Center. It is located at 6008 South IH-45 West in Angus, Texas. In addition to a large meeting room and two city offices, the building also houses fire trucks for the Angus Volunteer FireDepartment. Another office was later added to house the Chief of the Angus Volunteer Fire Department.
